    Default lifting handeling

trying to get an 11year old onto a tricycle and walking frame. saw a standing jacket that could be used on a hoist. extra small would seem to be the size. any idea where i could borrow one to confirm. £200 to make a mistake is a bit much and they cannot be returned because of contamination transfer. getting desparate to comply with him getting on and off his only means of physio. health and safety, red tape etc. input greatly appreciated

    Hi Cath,

The first thing I'd say is that we never recommend purchasing any moving and handling equipment without an assessment with your child's occupational therapist or physiotherapist. Different slings suit different children, and there are many considerations to bear in mind when choosing one. Find out about how you can arrange an assessment.

We have a range of children's slings listed on Living made easy for children. Suppliers are generally always happy to come out to arrange a trial of equipment with you, to ensure that anything you purchase is suitable. Included with the product information I've linked to are the contact details of many suppliers, so it is definitely worth getting in touch with a few to see what kinds of slings they offer (generally they have a large range of slings in many sizes to try) and booking in a trial.

Also on the topic of the OT or physio - if they are involved with the assessment and choice of sling, they will always check whether your child is eligible to receive the equipment through their local authority (to save you purchasing it). They will then arrange reviews to ensure the sling continues to meet your child's need and arrange replacements as their needs change and/or your child grows.

    Hope this helps.
    Emily, DLF Occupational Therapist.
