My freestanding gas cooker used to be stand-alone, with space all round it, so I could turn the handles of pots and pans round to avoid catching them accidentally. My new flat has a smaller kitchen, and the cooker has got to be right next to the only available worktop.

I saw, years ago, a hob guard/rail that went round all three exposed sides of the hob - but I can't find it now. I've seen some child-proof ones, but they only seem to cover the front, and I'm going to need both sides protected as well.

Does anyone know where I might find something that does the job, or how something can be adapted to do it?

Thanks

Frances

To celebrate ‘National Older People’s Day’, Ken Livingstone, several council members and the Mayor of Harrow will be starting and taking part in the 1st Scooter Challenge from Mobility World at 10:00am, Friday 1st October in association with Age Concern Harrow, British Transport Police, Mobility World and Sainsbury’s South Harrow.

To coincide with UN International Day of Older Persons, this fun event consists of a five-mile, two-hour round trip from outside Mobility World’s Harrow showroom to Sainsbury’s in South Harrow and back again. Approximately 15 stewards will be on hand to guide all entrants from Station Road, through the town centre and down Northolt Road to Sainsbury’s South Harrow where refreshments and information will be available.

During the weeks before the event, Age Concern Harrow, Mobility World and Sainsbury’s South Harrow will be raising awareness of the challenge and encouraging local’s who own a mobility scooter, are interested in purchasing one or would prefer to loan one from Mobility World, to enter the challenge. On 13th September there will also be an open day at the Mobility World showroom whereby prospective entrants can try out a scooter, register for the event and pick up sponsorship forms.

The purpose of the event is to change peoples’ perception of mobility scooters in a fun and positive way. It will also raise awareness of the impressive distances that many modern mobility scooters are capable of and that the stigma attached to them is now obsolete. For example, the ever-popular Breeze 3 and 4 from TGA Electric Leisure both provide aesthetic looks and a travel range of up to 20 miles with only standard batteries onboard.

Age Concern Harrow’s staff and volunteers will be available throughout the day along with the British Transport Police at their hospitality trailer. Refreshments and information for older people will be available in the centre of Harrow by the St. Ann’s and St George’s shopping centres until 3.00pm. All scooter or potential scooter owners over 18 are welcome to join the challenge. This event provides the ideal opportunity for individual’s of all ages living with restricted mobility to experience the benefits of owning a mobility scooter whilst understanding that safe driving is easy to achieve.

Mobility World is well known locally for providing specialist mobility advice and only supplying high quality and reliable products that include market-leading scooters from TGA. It’s showrooms in Harrow and Letchworth Garden City, showcase the latest independent living solutions from mobility scooters to walking sticks, adapted bathroom fittings to rise and recline chairs.

Poolin Shah, Mobility World’s Managing Director explained, ‘We are delighted to be welcoming Ken Livingstone to the event as he has demonstrated a keen interest in helping the less able. Daily independence is such a crucial facet of everyone’s life and we hope this challenge raises the awareness that this is still possible even if people are living with restricted mobility. Since opening Mobility World in 1993, I have been intrinsically involved with supporting the local community and over the past 3 years have also worked closely with Avani Modesia, Age Concern Harrow’s Chief Executive and the local council to find ways of improving accessibility for people through locally based projects. Not only do we supply quality products, such as TGA mobility scooters, but also offer independent advice and guidance to anyone who visits the showroom. This scooter challenge will give individuals a lighthearted way of testing the latest products we have on display and raising awareness of several topical subjects concerning mobility and accessibility.’

TGA National Sales Manager, Tim Ross concluded, ‘Mobility World is a valued, successful provider of our quality products and to thank the team for all its hard work, TGA has recently awarded the company A-Class dealer status. We congratulate Poolin on his continued efforts to help the local older community through raising awareness of mobility solutions and his extensive involvement with Age Concern Harrow. We wish all involved with the scooter challenge the best of luck.’
The organisers of Naidex South (September 29-30, London ExCeL) the newest event for independent living are delighted to announce that Debbie Moore OBE– the founder and chairman of Pineapple Dance Studios – and her daughter, Lara Masters, freelance writer, actress and presenter, will be opening the show.

Event Director Liz Virgo commented: “We are delighted to have Lara and Debbie opening Naidex South. Both are a huge source of inspiration to us all - Lara for ensuring that her disabilities have not got in the way of achieving her dreams, and Debbie for building a successful career whilst raising and supporting her daughter”.
Although many people will know Debbie Moore OBE from the hugely successful Pineapple Dance Studios series on Sky One the Pineapple story began over 30 years ago. Following the closure of the only dance studio in Central London, Debbie Moore OBE founded Pineapple Dance Studios in 1979.
Following this launch, a whole host of achievements followed - Debbie became the first female Chairman to take her company public on the London Stock Exchange when Pineapple became a public company in 1982 and in 1984 she was awarded the Veuve Clicquot 'Businesswoman of the Year Award' in recognition of her achievements as an entrepreneur. In 1989, Debbie published 'When A Woman Means Business' - a book offering business and lifestyle advice based on her own experiences and those of other pioneering female entrepreneurs. In the same year, Debbie and Pineapple were nominated for 'Contemporary Designer of the Year' at the British fashion awards. In July 2000, Debbie launched the 'Pineapple by Debbie Moore' range in Debenhams, which has now been extended to include leisurewear and childrenswear. Debbie was awarded her OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List in 2009 for services to business. And, whilst doing this, Debbie was also raising her daughter, Lara, who was diagnosed with a rare spinal disorder aged 10 which meant she has spent much time in a wheelchair.
“Raising a child with a disability is incredibly rewarding. I am very much looking forward to Naidex South and meeting manufacturers of equipment that makes such a difference to people’s lives as well as talking to children and their parents/carers to share my experiences in the hopes it can help them”, commented Debbie.

Lara has a successful career as a freelance writer, actress and presenter, and is the co-owner of a burlesque fashion label. She has worked in the media for several years and was the first disabled presenter in mainstream television. She has appeared on programmes such as the BBC's Summer Holiday through to That's Esther on ITV and appeared as a judge on BBC Three Britain’s Missing Top Model.

As a writer, she has worked in the film industry, bringing her disability knowledge to the role of script advisor for stars including Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson. She also wrote a fortnightly column for the disability website youreable.com – and it was here that she modelled in, cast, styled and produced a calendar of disabled models. Lara has been an active spokesperson on disability matters both on screen and in print, discussing perceptions of disability and the social and cultural problems faced by disabled people. She has spoken about disability rights in the European Parliament in Brussels, and the House of Lords.

“To be able to come to an event such as Naidex South and see the amazing products and sources of information available is fantastic. Whether it is a wheelchair, communication aid or converted vehicle to have so many different companies under one roof is particularly convenient and is something people living with disabilities in London certainly need”, commented Lara.
